Jesus Loves Perth

When people talk about Perth, a sleepy, small city comes to mind. Oh that and black swans.

This could not be further from the truth.

After being inspired by a trip interstate I have come to realize that Perth as a city, as amazing amount of potential in the way of Art, Culture, and Local Talent. That realization drove me to create this blog.

To understand my way of thinking, you should first get an understanding of my background.

I come from a very small town over seas. It's surrounded by bush lands, and sloping farm fields of sunflowers and corn. That was what we were famous for. Sunflowers and corn.

Now you city slickers may not think that's very interesting, and looking back now I suppose it wasn't; but through the eyes of a 11 year old it was certainly very amazing.

As a child I craved culture. I loved art, fashion, and multiculturalism. Where I came from there was a distinct lack of those elements.

We left Africa a month after my 13th birthday, and arrived in Perth, Western Australia during the summer month of February.

As a small 13 year old farm kid, I was absolutely taken aback by the tall buildings and busy roads of Perth. I was even more shocked to see I was within walking distance of a National Art Gallery and Library.

That to me was culture.

As I got older, I was exposed to a myriad of different people, and different ways of thinking. Different cultures and different sights and sounds.
I've met local artists, local musicians, and local writers. They all seemed to have this singular idea stuck in their head.

"Perth is a Cultural Wasteland"  They told me! I couldn't believe it. They all wanted to travel interstate to create a niche in the art-world for themselves.
As a 20-something year old, I want to use this blog as a tool, just to show people that, that is a lie.

We're creating our own culture, our own atmosphere, and our own history here! We're ripe with possibilities, and ready for change.

This blog is a collective collective of creative people, places and products from Perth and beyond. Simply put; It's the Best of Perth.

Stay Tuned.

  1. I'm from Melbourne originally and have only been here for 6 months, but even I'm often surprised by the way locals see Perth. In comparison to Melbourne, yeah, it is sleepy. I mean nothings open late, and nothings open on Sunday and that's just painful BUT...

Your live music scene rivals Melbourne's and would blow it away if anyone in this town knew how the hell to promote their gigs. Which they don't. So frustrating finding out about things weeks after they happened.

You have a HUGE bellydance sub-culture here that is just incredible and welcoming to everyone.

You have amazing bars. You might have to hunt a bit to find them but goddamn they exist and they are awesome. They also aren't required to close at 3... on the bad though the public transport systems in place here SUCK.

  2. Thanks Miss Twist! I have yet to check out the belly dance-culture on this side of Australia, but now that you've mentioned it I'll be sure to check it out.

We should have a Weekly Spotlight section up soon, so if you have any recommendations, bad or pub wise, be sure to send them through.

As for the public transport; Yes, I totally agree. After experiencing the wonders of Melbourne's Public Transport department this week, Perth certainly can learn a few things!

    Thanks for the input.

    L.x.
